1973 Ecuador Dos Sucres
The 2 Sucres coin of 1973 is one the world's rarest coins. According to Krause, the entire mintage of 2 million pieces were melted down with the exception of about 35 pieces. We do not know why the production order was cancelled, presumably the Ecuadorian government changed its mind as governments do, but the 2 sucres denomination had only been issued three times before, in 1928, 1930, and 1944. It is stated that only 35 examples of this type survive, after most were remelted following disapproval of the design. However, more than that have appeared in the numismatic market since. Regardless, it is RARE.

Made in Birmingham
These coins were struck at the Birmingham Mint, which has been supplying coins to many countries since 1794, having started out under Matthew Boulton as the Soho Mint. It also absorbed Ralph Heaton & Sons, and The Kings Norton Metal Company over the years, but sadly went into liquidation in March 2003.

Value
If this were a US coin, with only 35 existing, it would probably sell for over $100,000; consider that a specimen of the 1804 silver dollar with about 15 known sold for over $4 million. Krause catalogues this Ecuadorian coin at $300 in Uncirculated grade.
